Terms of Use.
The rules for using Memoir, written as directly as possible.
Agreement
These terms are between you and the Memoir team (“we”, “us”), the publisher of Memoir. By downloading or using Memoir, you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
What Memoir is
Memoir is an iPhone application for recording your life events and daily notes and viewing them beside a bundled archive of historical events.
Memoir runs on your device. We operate no Memoir account system or server receiving your archive. If you enable iCloud sync, eligible archive data is stored in your private iCloud database under your Apple Account; we cannot access or recover it for you.
Your content is yours
Everything you write, record, photograph and store in Memoir belongs to you. We claim no ownership, licence or right to use it, and the app does not transmit it to us. When iCloud sync is enabled, user-created events and notes may be transmitted directly to Apple's CloudKit service for storage in your private database.
You are responsible for what you store, including ensuring you have the right to keep photographs or recordings involving other people.
Licence to use the app
We grant you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to use Memoir on Apple devices you own or control, as permitted by App Store terms.
You may not copy, sell, rent, reverse-engineer or redistribute the app or extract its historical archive for redistribution, except where such a restriction is prohibited by law.
Historical content and accuracy
Memoir's historical archive is assembled automatically from public sources, principally Wikidata, with contextual article links to Wikipedia. Descriptions may be generated from structured facts and are not individually verified by a historian.
- Dates, places and details may be incomplete, approximate, disputed or wrong.
- Descriptions may be simplified, awkward or inaccurate.
- Coverage varies between places and periods.
- Some entries factually describe war, disasters, violence or death.
The archive is for interest and personal context—not academic, legal, journalistic, medical or other consequential use. Verify important information using authoritative primary sources. Corrections are welcome at support@mymemoirs.life.
Backups and data loss
Your archive has a local copy on your device. If iCloud sync is enabled, user-created events and notes may also be stored in your private iCloud database. Categories, preferences and saved historical events remain local. We have no server copy and cannot restore your archive on your behalf.
Deleting content while iCloud sync is active may propagate the deletion to iCloud and every other device using the same Apple Account. Memoir warns you about this before Start Fresh proceeds.
Memoir provides an export function for this reason. We strongly recommend exporting your archive regularly and keeping the file somewhere safe. Maintaining a backup is your responsibility.
To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for the loss of your content.
Acceptable use
Do not use Memoir to store or produce content that is unlawful where you are or infringes another person's rights. Do not attempt to interfere with the app or another person's device.
Third-party content and attribution
Memoir includes structured data from Wikidata released under CC0, contextual source links to Wikipedia content available under CC BY-SA, and Wikimedia Commons images under public-domain, CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA licences. The app includes a Sources & Credits screen, per-event source links when available, and author/licence/source credits on images that require attribution.
These credits are licence requirements. Do not remove, obscure or misattribute them when sharing material containing credited content.
Availability and changes
We may update, change or discontinue Memoir or its features. We will try not to remove capabilities people depend on. Your content remains under your control on your device, in your private iCloud database when enabled, and in any files you export.
We are not obliged to provide support, although we will make a reasonable effort to help.
Disclaimers and liability
Memoir is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, to the fullest extent permitted by law.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages or loss of data. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for the app, if any, during the twelve months before the claim.
Your statutory consumer rights remain unaffected.
Apple
Memoir is distributed through the App Store and is also subject to Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement. Where these terms conflict with Apple's EULA, Apple's EULA governs.
Apple is not a party to these terms, is not responsible for Memoir or its content, and has no obligation to provide support. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, the revised version will appear here with a new last-updated date. Continuing to use Memoir after a change means you accept the revised terms. Material changes will also be announced in the app.
