Privacy · Plainly stated
Your life stays yours.
The Memoir app does not collect your personal data. Your archive is stored on your iPhone and, when you enable iCloud sync, in the private iCloud database belonging to your Apple Account. The Memoir team cannot access either copy.
Who we are
Memoir is developed and published by the Memoir team (“we”, “us”).

What we collect
We do not collect personal data from the Memoir app.
We operate no Memoir account system, user database or server that receives your archive. We cannot see your memories, notes, photographs, recordings, places or app usage. If you enable iCloud sync, eligible archive data goes directly to Apple's CloudKit service—not to us—and is stored in the private database belonging to your Apple Account.
The Memoir app does not use advertising networks, analytics, attribution software or third-party tracking SDKs.
Website analytics
The Memoir website uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand aggregate page visits and website performance. Cloudflare Web Analytics does not use cookies, create advertising profiles or collect personal data for us. Website analytics never receive anything stored in the Memoir app.
What Memoir stores—and where
Everything you create is written to a private database inside Memoir's app container on your iPhone. This may include:
- events, dates, descriptions, categories and importance
- daily notes and attached voice recordings
- photographs you choose to attach
- places and coordinates attached to events or notes
- your chosen home city and country
- appearance, calendar, category and reminder settings
- historical events you choose to save
This information is protected by iOS file protection and your device security.
Private iCloud sync
iCloud sync is enabled by default and can be changed under Settings → Backup → Sync with iCloud. A change takes effect after you restart Memoir.
While sync is enabled, Memoir syncs your user-created events and daily notes—including attached photographs, places and voice recordings—to your private CloudKit database. The Memoir team cannot browse or retrieve those records.
The bundled historical archive, categories, appearance and calendar preferences, home location and saved historical-event list remain local to each device. Turning sync off does not delete your local copy or erase data already stored in iCloud.
If you delete Memoir, iOS deletes that device's local data. Previously synced data may return when you reinstall Memoir with sync enabled. We cannot recover it for you because we never receive or control that copy.
Optional permissions
Memoir requests access only when a feature needs it. Declining a permission leaves the rest of the app available.
Location while using the app
When you choose Use Current Location, Memoir uses Apple MapKit to determine your home city and country. Your location is not tracked in the background or recorded over time. You may instead search for a city or leave the setting empty.
Photo library
Apple's photo picker gives Memoir only the image you choose, not access to your entire library. The selected image is resized and stored in the app. If attached to a synced event or note while iCloud sync is enabled, it also becomes part of that private iCloud record.
Microphone and speech recognition
Recording and transcription happen on your device. A saved recording and its text may sync as part of a daily note through your private iCloud database when iCloud sync is enabled. Memoir never uploads recordings to the Memoir team or to a fallback transcription service.
Notifications
Reminders are scheduled locally by iOS. Memoir does not use push notifications.

Maps and place search
Map tiles, search and place-name lookup are provided by Apple MapKit under Apple's Privacy Policy.
Historical images
Images accompanying historical events may be loaded from Wikimedia Commons. The request does not include your notes, memories or photographs.
External links
Opening the Memoir website, a source, a credit or a read-more link transfers you to your browser, where the destination site's privacy practices apply.
Historical content
Memoir includes a fixed historical archive inside the app. It is the same for every user and reveals nothing about you. Structured data comes principally from Wikidata under CC0. Contextual source links lead to Wikipedia, and freely licensed or public-domain images may come from Wikimedia Commons. Settings → Sources & Credits contains archive-level acknowledgements, and individual historical events show direct source and image credits when available.
iCloud sync and device backup
Memoir's user-controlled CloudKit sync is described in section 3. Separately, if iCloud Backup is enabled, Apple's device backup may include Memoir's local data like data from other apps. Both services belong to your Apple Account and are governed by Apple's privacy policy. We cannot access either one.
Your control over your data
- Export: Settings → Backup → Export creates a plain JSON file you can keep and read without Memoir.
- Delete items: Events and daily notes can be deleted inside the app.
- Start fresh: Settings → Backup → Start Fresh removes user-created events, daily notes and saved historical events after two confirmations. When iCloud sync is active, the warning explains that deletions also propagate to iCloud and your other synced devices.
- Delete the app: Removing Memoir removes its local app data; previously synced data may remain in your private iCloud database.
Because we do not hold your archive, there is no server copy for us to supply, correct or erase.
Children
Memoir is not directed to children under 13 and does not collect information from anyone, including children. The historical archive may include factual descriptions of war, disasters, violence or death, and the App Store age rating reflects that content.
Security
Local data is protected by iOS file protection and your device security. Synced events and notes are stored in the private CloudKit database associated with your Apple Account. We recommend keeping a device passcode and Apple Account two-factor authentication enabled and storing exported backups somewhere you trust.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the revised version will appear here with a new last-updated date. If Memoir ever begins collecting personal data, that change will be disclosed in the app before it takes effect.
